About Whixall

Whixall is a small rural parish situated in North Shropshire.

Data from the 2011 Census showed that the population is  795 people (322 households).

Whixall lies on the border with Wales and the nearest towns are the market towns of Wem to the South and Whitchurch to the North.

Within the parish boundaries are a number of hamlets:

• Hollinwood;
• Abbey Green;
• Welsh End;
• Stanley Green;
• Dobson’s Bridge; and
• Far End

Although there are no main roads running through the Parish it is ideally situated for access to Chester, Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Stoke and Manchester​

The Llangollen Canal and the partly-open Prees Arm both run through the parish. Whixall Marina lies at the navigable end of the Prees Arm. The Marina runs a fleet of holiday narrow boats as well as providing private berths, some canal services and a café.

Whixall Parish Council owns the Marlot Local Nature Reserve (LNR), This is a, is a six-acre site of common land next to Whixall Moss. Located a short walk from the Roundthorn Bridge boat mooring on the Llangollen Canal (which also has a small car park), it’s worth the walk to visit the site and learn of its history.

Whixall also includes a large part of the 948 hectare (2340 acres) Fenn’s, Whixall, Bettisfield, Wem and Cadney Mosses which has SSSI status (Site of Special Scientific Interest).
